Subject: value of Library Classes (fwd)

Hi!

The following is result of a "field trip" of my senior class to the
Library. It shows student's lack of exposure to the Library, and the
value they perceive of library databases.

We do address some of this in CS1604, but that is mostly for non-majors.

This ties in with Self-Study recommendations re information literacy.

Thanks, eaf

Subject: Library Classes

Dr. Fox,
I really enjoyed the lecture in the library we had on Thursday.
The databases we were introduced to are very useful and I wish I knew more
about them when I was a freshman! Using those databases would have saved
me WEEKS of research!
I think that all freshmen entering into the CS program should be
required to take some kind of a "library seminar", where they get
introduced to all kinds of library resources, including databases. It
could even be a 1-credit course, where students take classes in the
library, getting a hands-on experience! If a whole course is too much, the
seminar could even be encorporated into the CS1205 and CS1206. I believe
that the seminar would be very benefitial to all students, especially when
taking higher level courses.
