Subject: Meeting on Monday March 24

It looks as though 1-3 might be a good time for most of you on Monday March
24. Please hold this time. I'll confirm it after I've heard from everyone
else!

Ed would also like to have the customary Thursday morning meeting on March
20 (i.e., next Thursday). Hopefully, you will have received a very
preliminary draft (actually, a stringing together of what we have) before
then. We'll need to move extremely rapidly to fill in gaps, etc., and come
up with recommendations that we can justify/defend.

As you may know, Peggy is working on her implementation strategy for the
University Plan Update. The timing is lousy, but if we really wish to have
an impact on the university's direction, at least in the short term, we
need to have some preliminary recommendations to her by March 26 (when she
will be meeting with the Steering Committee). The implementation plan
itself is to be in place by August.

Unfortunately, events around us are moving so rapidly that we have to
proceed much faster than most of us would prefer. But it's no good
complaining about it ... we have to make our voice heard now if we are to
avoid becoming irrelevant.

Please think about very specific and tangible recommendations (with
indications of WHO should carry them out and by WHEN). The sooner they are
on the table, the more likely we will be able to give them some airing
(i.e., solicit other opinions about them) before or around the same time as
we give them to Peggy.

Not an ideal process, by any means ..... but it's all we have! David
