I concur with Cathy's idea that the various developmental theories will
give us some good ideas about how to construct a "developmentally
appropriate" curriculum for our students.  I can add to her references, and
also provide some additional ideas from other sources about the importance
of looking at the whole picture...that is, learning and development that
occurs over relatively long time periods in contrast to the short periods
(i.e., courses) that we normally think about when doing our work as
individual faculty members. One of the really important things about this
kind of thinking is that it forces us to deal with the kind of teaching and
learning environments that promote real conceptual shifts.  More later.
