"Distance Teaching over the Internet Multicast Backbone (MBone)"
Friday, January 31, 9:00-10:00 a.m. in Room 457, Whittemore Hall

As a part of the SUCCEED DT-05 project, NC State has been experimenting
with the use of desktop conferencing technology as a means of providing
distance education. Most of this effort has concentrated on the
Internet Multicast Backbone (MBone) which provides real-time multimedia
over the Internet. During the Fall 96 semester, an entire course was
delivered over the MBone from NC State to students in the Industrial
Engineering Masters program at UNC-Asheville. This technology was also
used for faculty office hours for a sophomore-level electrical
engineering course, also delivered from NC State to UNC-Asheville.
This presentation will cover the unique advantages of this approach to
the delivery of distance education, and how it is being used in this
manner at NC State. A preliminary evaluation of last semester's
experience will be presented, including student performance results and
faculty and student perceptions of this delivery mechanism.
