Hello everyone, this is a reminder of my earlier invitation to attend a
research presentation that my "College Teaching" students are doing this
Wednesday, at 4:00 pm. The discussion should be pertinent to our
committee.

Here is the context again. Each time I teach this course on college
teaching, I try to get the participants involved in some investigation
concerning teaching and learning within the Tech community. This semester
we decided to investigate students' perceptions of ACADEMIC SUCCESS,
following the major program that John Fulton put into place this semester.
To avoid a long story here the class (15 graduate students) organized
themselvs into 4 groups and and developed surveys (in three of the cases)
designed to investigate students' perceptions of academic success and the
role that Virginia Tech plays in supporting their success. One group
surveyed undergraduates...about 400. Another did telephone surveys of
alumni...about 50. A third surveyed graduate students..about 85. And a
fourth group surveyed graduate students about the role that technology
plays in their academic life...I think they have about 180 cases.

In short, the group as a whole has a fair amount of data...and the issues
they are addressing do relate nicely to our self study discussion. The
shortcomings are that the data can best be viewed as pilot work....the
methodologies vary across the four groups, and the surveys, if used again
would likely be modified in substantial ways. Nevertheless, if you think
spending roughly an hour and a half with us at the end of the day on
Wednesday would be potentially useful and interesting, we'd love to have
you visit with us.

The location is 220 War Memorial Hall. To get there go past the
information desk as you enter the gym, then go up to the second floor
(elevator or stairs), and down the Hallway till you arrive at the window
overlooking the pool. As soon as you get to the pool overlook go into the
computer lab on the left..this is 220. The classroom is inside the
computer lab.

If you don't mind, please let me know if you plan to stop by on Wednesday.
The classroom is small and I need to arrange for a few extra seats. An
e-mail note would be fine (wiley@vt.edu) Thanks and I hope to see you on
Wednesday.

Terry Wildman
