PC-Hypertext: Information Acquisition Step 1. The information was converted into digital format by keyboard entry and scanning. The scanner was an HS-3000 hand scanner capable of 400 dot per inch resolution with 32 gray tones (see Section 2.2.1.3 for a description of the HS-3000). The use of OCR (optical character recognition) software greatly facilitated text conversion, eliminating much of the manual transcription of source information. Depending on the typestyle and the clarity of the original text source, the OCR software (CARETS/BY HAND DELUXE, Pattern Analytics, Inc., Raleigh, NC) demonstrated exceptional accuracy in transcribing the ASCII files from monospaced and typeset (proportional) sources. Graphic information was scanned into a (.PCX) file format using the HS-3000 for future integration into the information base. PC-Hypertext: 5 Assembly Steps PC-Hypertext: Information Parsing
