CRISTAL Summary:

The objective in the development of the CRISTAL prototype was to
demonstrate an information management application which focused
on the need to accommodate image acquisition, storage, and
manipulation as an essential part of the preservation process.
The CRISTAL environment permitted additional explorations into
relevant issues concerning image analysis, processing, and
integration. It was expected that the graphic techniques
explored in the prototype applications would demonstrate their
utility in preservation applications by serving as the basis for
investigations into building techniques and materials, public
perceptions toward existing cultural resources, the cumulative
effects of historical change, and the effects of proposed
management strategies and modifications on the contextual fabric
of "place."
