Fox" Date: Thu, 12 Sep 85 18:02:02 est Subject: BITNET sites please note change at Virginia Tech [Note: Our BITNET and CSNET gateway machine just came up after 1 week, so please forgive delay in sending this issue out.] The BITNET node names for Virginia Tech will change on Sept. 15. Whereas previously my address was fox@vpics1 it will then be fox@vtcs1. This goes along with the popular trend, reinforced by sports announcers and by the VT President, to refer to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University by its other name, Virginia Tech. ------------------------------ From: "V.J. Raghavan" Date: Sat, 24 Aug 85 21:25:15 cst [Following is msg from Chairman of SIGIR that will appear in upcoming issue of the Forum and so will be received by ACM SIGIR members. - Ed] CHAIRMAN's MESSAGE I would like to encourage you to participate in the activities of ACM- SIGIR. The Forum is for all of us. You are all cordially welcome to contribute regular papers, reviews, important news, etc. Some of you may like to specify problems that have long-term interests, but without immediate solutions. The problems should be stated in such a way that readers will understand the various facets of the problems, their difficulties and their significance. I am sure there are plenty of researchers who are looking for interesting problems. Hopefully, this will rejuvenate our field. IR overlaps with many fields: data base, artificial intelligence, office automation, architecture, etc. Those of you who work in IR and in one or more of the other fields may wish to initiate joint conferences or workshops. This will bring new and exciting problems into our area and broaden our scope of interests. Mike Lesk, our past chairman, is preparing a joint workshop with SIGDOC on Document Generation Principles. If you are interested in initiating joint ventures with other special interest groups, please let me know. Our regular membership fee of $6 per year is one of the lowest among all ACM SIGs (if not the lowest). Unfortunately though a very substantial overhead charge is applied by ACM headquarters, and we are projecting a deficit. This will force us to increase our membership fee. The amount of increase will be determined when accurate financial data are available. If you have any good ideas to improve ACM-SIGIR, feel free to contact me. Talks are given Wedn. afternoons at 4 pm. Discussions on information retrieval, computer networks, etc. are of particular interest. Contact Dr. E. A. Fox at (703) 961-5113 or 6931 if you can come or would like to recommend another. Blacksburg is in a beautiful area of the country, on a plateau surrounded by mountains, near the Jefferson National Forest, so fall is a particularly nice time to come! ------------------------------ END OF IRList Digest ********************
