We are particularly interested in work that addresses the way computer systems can support their user's problem solving needs. Relevant topics for this conference are: - Intelligent support of human communication - Computer supported cooperative work - Automated reasoning and problem solving - User interfaces and user interface management systems - Tutoring, Training & Education - Design, Manufacturing & Control - Planning - Human Problem Solving Although purely theoretical papers will be considered, all papers should indicate how the technology will be used to change the way people think and communicate. Papers due: December 9, 1988 Authors must submit three copies of their paper, not to exceed 4000 words. Each submission must include the keywords describing the research and state whether it will be submitted to another conference. Send to: James H. The 1990 Congress is the eighth in a series, previous events having been held in London (1969), Oxford (1972), Bucharest (1975), Amsterdam (1978), Mexico City (1981), Paris (1984) and London (1987). The Congress will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of current research. Several specialized sections will focus on computer science, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, biocybernetics, psychocybernetics and sociocybernetics. Suggestions for other relevant topics are welcome. Participants who wish to organize a symposium or a section, are requested to submit a proposal ( sponsor, subject, potential participants, very short abstracts ) as soon as possible, but not later than September 1989. The editorial board is especially keen to encourage publication of articles which deal with the application of philosophical psychology to the cognitive and brain sciences, and to areas of applied psychology. Thus, we are committed to publishing high-quality papers on such topics as the philosophical foundations of cognitive science, the potential of connectionism as an alternative to symbolic models, the scientific status of psychological explanations, the inter- disciplinary endeavors of psycholinguistics, and the implications of developments in clinical psychology for theories of the mind. A special feature of the journal is periodic publication of symposia on important recently published books. The current issue (volume 1, number 2) contains two discussions of Alfred Mele's recent book IRRATIONALITY: AN ESSAY ON AKRASIA, SELF-DECEPTION, AND SELF CONTROL (Oxford, 1987). A forthcoming issue (volume 2, number 1, will contain three discussions of William Lycan's LOGICAL FORM IN NATURAL LANGUAGE (MIT, 1986). PHILOSOPHICAL PSYCHOLOGY will appear three times a year. 1988 was the first year of publication and we have sent the final issue for volume 1 to the publisher. We are now reviewing manuscripts for volume 2. If you have a paper that you think is appropriate, I urge you to consider submitting to PHILOSOPHICAL PSYCHOLOGY. All submissions that are deemed appropriate for the journal will be subjected to refereeing, generally by both a philosopher and a psychologist. Thus, we hope to be able to offer substantive evaluations and suggestions on all papers submitted to us. Submissions may be sent to either editor: 1. Dr. John Rust, Editor, Univ. of London Institute of Education, 25 Woburn Square, London, WC1H 0AA, ENGLAND 2. Dr. William Bechtel, Associate Editor, Department of Philosophy, Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA 30303-3083 e-mail: PHLPWB@GSUVM1.BITNET At this stage we are still developing our pool of reviewers. If you are interested in refereeing papers for PHILOSOPHICAL PSYCHOLOGY, please send a statement of interest to William Bechtel (PHLPWB@GSUVM1.bitnet). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Oct 88 14:30:06 EDT From: Steven.Shafer@IUS1.CS.CMU.EDU Subject: Robotics PhD Program at CMU CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY PHD PROGRAM IN ROBOTICS Carnegie Mellon announces a new interdisciplinary PhD program in Robotics that brings together the Robotics Institute, the Carnegie Institute of Technology (engineering school), the Computer Science Department, and the Graduate School of Industrial Administration (business school). Students in this program take courses in Robotics and other related areas of study, and carry out research in the unique laboratories of the Robotics Institute. Students with interest in robotics and a strong academic background are encouraged to apply for admission to this program. TOPICS OF STUDY IN ROBOTICS Students in the Robotics Program study the basic sciences and technologies of robotics: - PERCEPTION - COGNITION - MANIPULATION Students in the Robotics Program also study and do research in large integrated robot systems: - MANUFACTURING AUTOMATION - MOBILE ROBOTS THE PhD PROGRAM Students in this course of study are enrolled in the Ph.D. Program in Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. Each student designs an individualized course of study from a selection of basic and applied topics in robotics. The program is heavily research-oriented in all phases with hands-on experience from the very beginning of graduate studies. Students have the opportunity to pursue their own ideas, and to publish their results by writing scientific papers. All applicants admitted to the PhD program will receive full financial support. FOR INFORMATION Students interested in the program should apply for admission to the Robotics Program at Carnegie Mellon. For application information, write to: Graduate Admissions Coordinator, Robotics Program The Robotics Institute Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh PA 15213. Application information should be available in the Winter of 1988-9; the first admissions to the program will be in Fall 1989. ------------------------------ End of AIList Digest ********************
