Virginia Tech Internet-TIC Meeting Minutes, 9/3/98 (prepared by I. Jacobs, edited by E. Fox) Attendees: Ed Fox, Sherry Burlingame, Andrew Cohill, John Husser, Ira Jacobs, Anne Moore, Cliff Shaffer, Scott Midkiff (audio-conference) 1. Education/VCEC Anne Moore chairs the Virginia Commonwealth Electronic Campus (VCEC), a volunteer group that makes information available (www.vacec.bev.net) on course offerings in universities/colleges throughout Virginia. Discussion of how ITIC should be involved with VCEC proceeded. At a minimum we should certainly provide technology support and should coordinate our efforts to deliver short courses to serve the business community interested in the Internet. A subcommittee [Anne Moore (convener), Sherry Burlingame, Andrew Cohill, John Husser, Cliff Shaffer] was formed to address the Educational Support Mission of the Center (including, but not limited to, our relationship with VCEC). It will report back to the group regarding objectives and recommendations for action. 2. Areas of Expertise/Charter The seven areas of expertise currently listed on the Center Web page (fox.cs.vt.edu/itic) were abstracted from some past slides prepared by Tom Caruso on Internet Technology Innovators. Scott Midkiff indicated need to make distinction between access architecture and access deployment technologies, and will provide some material on this, working with Andy Cohill and Jeff Crowder. Ed Fox indicated need to refine the listing, and to have subgroups in specific areas. Cliff Shaffer will lead a subgroup on "Collaboration." Ultimately every group will organize and establish both short and long-term objectives. Tom Caruso expressed willingness to update his "Areas of Expertise" page based on any results from these discussions. Ed also indicated need for a Charter, and will provide preliminary thoughts at the next meeting. 3. Space Agreed that Center needs office space, phone, and listing in campus directory. ACITC (Advanced Communications and Information Technology Center, now under construction) might be the appropriate long term location (but this must be requested from D. Ford). In any event interim space is needed. Ed Fox will look into options (Pointe West Commons, McBryde, Brodie, CAVE). 4. Reminders/Seminars/Future Send slides on areas of expertise to Jeff Crowder. Send seminar suggestions to Bill Tranter. The first Center seminar will be joint with the CS Seminar on Tuesday, September 8 at 3:30 PM in Randolph 211. Topic: Blacksburg Electronic Village Speaker: Andrew Cohill, Director, BEV [Bill Tranter will help with planning of future seminars - he could not attend the 9/3 meeting.] For future discussion, think about what we should be doing about an Industrial Partnership/Affiliates Program.
