Internet-TIC SUMMARY MINUTES, 8/27/98 (by Tom Caruso , edited by eaf) 0.) The local Web site has home page http://fox.cs.vt.edu/itic/ 1.) Anne Moore had to leave before the meeting began, but left Ed Fox with an item to discuss about the Commonwealth Electronic Campus, which she leads, becoming part of the Internet TIC. She will work through this option and continue discussions with the CEC and ITIC groups at future meetings. There was general interest in pursuing this idea if there is a match in goals and objectives. 2.) A comment was made that short courses may be the most important educational deliverable right now. Scott Midkiff replied that we need to take the Graduate Program in Information Technology and create short courses from it. Other related programs could yield useful short courses too. Then we would use the Internet TIC to push these courses. 3.) The current University Interdisciplinary Center Policy and a draft of the new policy were both obtained from Sherry Burlingame. 4.) Internet TIC-VT meets the criteria for the University Interdisciplinary Center. A proposal is required to apply for Center status, which must address the requirements for governance, funding, continuance, termination, and approvals. The Internet TIC-VT group will work out the details and submit the application. 5.) Ira Jacobs volunteered to attend the intellectual properties meeting on Sept. 25 (in Richmond) because Ed Fox could not go, and Ira has previous experience with the IP Committee at Virginia Tech. Ed Fox was asked to verify whether Ira needed to attend. [Note: Yes, this is appropriate, so Ira and Mike Martin will both attend the meeting - Ed.] 6.) Litton Network Access Systems funding for graduate research assistants will be run through the administrative structure established for Internet TIC-VT. 7.) Tom Caruso pointed out several important opportunities represented by the Litton Network Access Systems relationship. First, we may have an opportunity to create a chaired position that would work in the area that Litton NAS needs help in. Once the relationship is created Internet TIC-VT should contact VT Development to pursue this chaired position opportunity. Second, one of Litton PRC's Vice Presidents, Don Upton, is Secretary of Technology. He should be an advocate of the Internet TIC if we create a good relationship here. Furthermore, Litton PRC has substantial employment needs, and might boost the involvement of Litton if this relationship works well. 8.) Scott Midkiff discussed the possibility of designing more courses for the areas in which Litton has specific needs. 9.) For the road show presentation...everyone needs to submit Powerpoint slides about their area, and what they are doing that might be relevent to Internet TIC clients. 10.) The monthly seminar, to be arranged by Bill Tranter, should be done keeping in mind the broader VT audience interested in the Internet TIC. 11.) For a website and marketing materials, we need to have something rudimentary right now. We need to create something quickly so Jeff Crowder can start using it with his clients. Others should do likewise. Jeff Crowder agreed to collect PowerPoint slides from all parties. 12.) We need to start building a detailed list of Internet TIC-interested parties at Virginia Tech. A starting list can be found at Industry Program Development Office "Areas of Expertise" website for Internet Technology: http://www.rgs.vt.edu/industry/areas/internet.html. [Note: There is a link to this from the current local Internet TIC-VT home page - Ed.] 13.) Ed Fox volunteered to spend an hour on Wednesday, 23 Sept at the Virginia Tech Booth of the SBIR Workshop at Donaldson Brown HCC. This conference will have more than 300 companies visiting campus. Most of these are interested in working with universities. Others are encouraged to volunteer too, and should contact Tom Caruso to finalize details. 14.) Jeff Crowder will work on providing the Internet TIC with a top level domain for Internet TIC. Jeff will offer this to Alf Weaver. [Note: This offer has been accepted by Alf - Ed.] -- Thomas P.
