======================================================================== REMM.SYS ======================================================================== 0. INTRODUCTION: This REMM.SYS is the version 4.10 driver. There are several new features included in the newest driver. As with all Rampage expanded memory cards, optimum performance will be obtained if memory on the motherboard of the PC is disabled to 256K (if possible). Several clones do not allow the user to disable memory below 512K on the motherboard, so they will not be able to run as many Windows applications, such as Excel and PageMaker, simultaneously. However, performance on these machines will still be dramatically improved over the earlier versions of the driver. Consult your AST Rampage owner's manual for information on switch settings for various setup options. Optimum performance can be achieved if you allocate at least 64K of your cards memory to extended memory for use by himem.sys. It may be necessary to consult with a technician or dealer familiar with your machine's memory configuration to verify that it is optimized for performance with Windows. 1. INSTALLATION: This version of REMM.SYS is auto-configuring. REMM.SYS will exclude the upper memory ranges above 640K that are used by devices other than the Rampage card, provided the REMM.SYS driver is loaded after the corresponding entries for the other cards' drivers in CONFIG.SYS. The suggested order for loading devices in CONFIG.SYS is shown below: a. Any drivers for hard disk partioning utilities or exotic disks such as CD-ROM's, WORM optical disks, or high performance hard disk controllers. b. ANSI.SYS. c. Any drivers for mice, light pens, digitizing pads, or other pointing devices. d. Any drivers for graphics cards such as EGA.SYS (supplied in the Windows package). This driver improves Windows' handling of screen colors when working with standard DOS applications such as Microsoft Word. e. Any drivers for image scanners. f. Rampage REMM.SYS. The device line for REMM.SYS should be moved as near to the end of the CONFIG.SYS file as possible. The only device drivers that should follow it are the entries for RAMDRIVE.SYS or SMARTDRIVE.SYS. Before making any of the following changes to your CONFIG.SYS file, please make a backup copy before proceding. This may be accomplished by entering the following command from the DOS prompt: copy C:\config.sys C:\config.saf (substitute the correct letter for the drive from which DOS is booted, such as a: if different than the above entry) If your current REMM.SYS command line reads: Device=REMM.SYS /X=AOOO-BFFF (for an EGA or VGA graphics adapter) Device=REMM.SYS /X=B000-BFFF (for a Hercules/monochrome graphics adapter) Device=REMM.SYS /X=B800-BFFF (for a CGA color graphics adapter) Edit the command line to read: Device=REMM.SYS If there are other /X= entries in the original REMM.SYS entry, double check to find out what they are for. These entries may correspond to upper memory addresses which are excluded from EMS mapping so that other cards such as scanners, network cards, or special hard disk controllers may use these ranges instead. 2. ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS: While REMM.SYS will avoid assigning upper memory ranges to expanded memory during the loading of CONFIG.SYS, it will not be aware of other "silent" devices that use memory in the ranges above 640K unless those ranges are specifically excluded in the REMM.SYS line with the /X= entry. Most of these devices are network cards whose software does not make use of these upper memory regions until they are activated later in AUTOEXEC.BAT or via the batch file used to start the network software (thus the term "silent" device). The user is encouraged to check with his/her dealer or hardware support technician to determine what addresses these cards may use. Further it is advisable to determine if the upper memory address range used by the device is moved out as far as possible in upper memory to allow the Windows/Excel memory managers as large a contiguous range of memory addresses as possible. Each of these "silent" devices which uses upper memory addresses will require a /X= parameter in the command line for REMM.SYS. 3. OPTIONAL PARAMETERS FOR REMM.SYS If the user wishes to view detailed configuration information during startup, the parameter /N may be added to the REMM.SYS command line: Device=REMM.SYS /N This parameter may be used in conjunction with the /X= parameter. For example the line: Device=REMM.SYS /X=COOO-CFFF /N will exclude any upper memory ranges used for video display memory and the range from C000-CFFF for another device (/X=COOO-CFFF). Detailed configuration information diagnostics will be displayed (/N).
