Sets Menu 1: Default Search Operator The Sets option on the Options Pulldown Menu is used to change the default settings as well as to assess the status of default settings and other database variables. The Sets option calls up a Settings Dialog box which contains the following items: Default Search Operator -- OR -- AND -- ADJACENT List Options -- Show Doc ID # -- Hide Field Labels -- Hide All on Click Database Statistics Default Search Operator OR The default for WINDOWS PERSONAL LIBRARIAN is usually set to an "OR" Search Operator. In an "OR" search, every word and/or number inserted in the Search Window Text Entry Area will be searched for in the database and considered a hit, if found. Therefore, all documents containing any one or a combination of these search terms will be retrieved by a search unless you have typed in a different Boolean operator, such as an "and", to override the default operator between any two terms. To change the Search Operator Default, move your mouse pointer to the Sets Menu and click. AND To change the Default Search Operator to an "AND" Search Operator, click on the "AND" button (circle) in the Sets Menu. In an "AND" search, each word you place in the Search Box must be present in a document in order for the document to be retrieved. ADJACENT When "ADJACENT" is chosen as the search operator default, each word in the Search Text Entry Area must be found (not including Stop Words) in the SAME ORDER as entered and NEXT TO ONE ANOTHER in order for the document to be retrieved. This method is used for searching a string of words or phrases. Note: All the above operators may be manually entered or overridden between any two search variables (words, etc.).
