As mentioned previously, a fundamental and recurring challenge of effective cultural resource management is the efficient organization and management of data resources. The objective of the development of the CRISTAL prototypes was to produce a system that successfully organizes and integrates a variety of data types (images, text, graphics, etc.) in order to enhance access to data resources. This consolidated database can be as complex and inclusive as the nature of the resources and the needs of the resource managers' demands. Basic resource records consist of the information fields that are included in the NPS's List of Classified Structures. A more comprehensive record would include information concerning maintenance, building system components, special conditions and treatments, and drawings of construction details. In either case, the text and graphic information fields are linked to a collection of digital images of the historic resource, site views, historical photographs, and any other relevant visual information.
