User Interface: "... mankind's unthinkably complex consensual hallucination, the matrix, cyberspace, where the great corporate hotcores burned like neon novas, data so dense you suffered sensory overload if you tried to apprehend more than the merest outline." (Gibson, 1987) A variety of man/computer interface initiatives are being developed as alternatives to simple key board and pointing devices. Tablets are now available to translate handwriting into ASCII files, and voice activated systems of limited vocabularies have been recently introduced to serve the needs of visually impaired users (NPR, 6/26/89). Similarly, visually activated systems that correlate eye or hand movements to graphic icons on a display screen are being explored (Brand, 1988). Other developments in interface technologies are broadening the capabilities for additional sensory interactions and simulations. The full range of sensory experiences are being explored, and future systems will enable a computer/user exchange of information about heat, cold, wet, dry, smell, taste, rough, smooth, and other sensory perceptions.
