We are interested in finding others who are tak- ing a similar approach. If you are already working in this area, please respond by email or USmail (please do not post), so that we can form an informal network, and inter- change information. Can anyone give a short summary for the layman of those two mathematical topics? And perhaps a pointer as to how they might be useful in formalizing certain AI concepts. Is anybody out there knowing whether the IEEE Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications (CAIA) will be held in 1989 ? If there will be a CAIA again in 1989, what is the deadline for the submission of papers? The 4th CAIA has been held March 14-18, 1988 at Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel, San Diego, California, and has been sponsored by 'The Computer Society of the IEEE'. I couldn't find any announcement or call for papers for a 5th CAIA in the June-1988-issues of both 'Comm.ACM' and 'IEEE Computer'. Sorry for this posting if I have missed a message about that. In particular >could you please answer the following questions: > >1) What is the Steadicam Gyro? How can I find one?? How does it work??? The Steadicam (TM) is a device used by professional movie photographers when it is necessary to photograph with a hand-held camera but high stability is required. It consists of one or more gyros on poles, attached to a harness worn by the cameraman. It is rather expensive, for no good reason, is patented, and is not particularly useful for autonomous vehicle operation. >2) What is Sorbothane shock mounting? Sorbothane is an interesting material used for gymnastic mats and such. It's a soft plastic with some of the properties of a liquid. [The only other place I have seen it used is as shock-absorbing pads in (somewhat expensive) bicycling gloves. -- nick] >3) What are accelerometers and rate gyros? Any suppliers?? ETAK, Inc. (Menlo Park, CA USA) is coming out with a low-cost two-axis rate gyro in a few months. Expensive ones can be obtained from makers of military and aircraft navigation equipments. I suggest you read up on inertial guidance and aircraft autopilots before acquiring anything. Panasonic showed a gyroscopically stablized consumer-grade camcorder at the Consumer Electronics Show this summer. It should be available at Japanese retailers by the end of the year. This may be a promising approach.
