RE: Reporting on EI projects

Date: August 18, 1994

Faculty members involved with modifying or creating classes in connection with the EI grant are expected to report on their progress and results. We are happy to help, but you are the only ones able to do this task. In particular, we ask that you supply us with the following three documents:

I) Goals and pre-evaluation:
to be done prior to beginning work on your project. If you have already started on your project, please do this NOW.
II) Results of creating materials and evaluation plan:
to be done after preparing materials for your course, but prior to first use in class.
III) Evaluation results and concluding comments:
to be done after first use of materials in class.

These reports need not be long, and can be sent in the form of an email message if you like. Cliff Shaffer will be visiting each of you individually to discuss evaluation plans. Below is more information and some questions to help guide you when writing the reports.

I) Goals and Pre-evaluation:

  1. What are the educational goals of your course?
  2. How do these goals compare with the goals that drove the previous version of the course (if any) or the way the course was taught previously?
  3. What information will you collect from the previous method of teaching the course? In other words, how will you determine a baseline so as to measure the level of success resulting from your project?
  4. What do you plan to do for your project? In other words, how will you change the course, and/or what materials do you plan to develop? How do these materials relate to the goals of your course?
  5. How do you plan to evaluate the effectiveness of your course changes? Note that there are two parts to evaluation:
    1. Are the materials clear and usable?
(This refers to the quality of your implementation.)
    2. Do the materials have the intended educational effect?
(This refers to the effectiveness of your materials assuming a satisfactory implementation.)

II) Results of creating materials and evaluation plan:

  1. What have you learned from the process of creating materials for this class?
  2. How are the resulting materials different from what you intended to create prior to beginning the project?
  3. What are the results of the baseline evaluation conducted on the previous version of the course?
  4. What is your plan for evaluating the effectiveness of the new course or materials? How is this different from your plan prior to creating the materials?
  5. Have the course goals changed from when you began the project?

III) Evaluation results and concluding comments:

  1. What are the results of the evaluation process for this course? What was the impact of your changes?
  2. How should the course or your materials be modified as a result of your experience?
  3. Any other comments regarding this project.
