The ATM equipment can switch voice, data, video, and LAN (Local Area Network) connections over local and wide area networks at speeds up to 155 megabits per second with aggregate bandwidth at switch nodes of up to 10 gigabits per second. The higher speeds are needed to support the growth of old applications, to support new applications which make full use of multimedia sound and visual information, and to support a new generation of distributed, parallel and client-server computing. An open invitation is extended to anyone who would like to see the demonstration. No reservation is needed--first come, first served. The location is Andrews Information Systems Building, 1700 Pratt Drive, Computer Classroom A (near Room 120 on the lower level). Dress is casual. The schedule for demonstration sessions is as follows: Dec. 13 and 14 (Wed and Thur) from 3-4 pm and from 4-5 pm Dec. 15 (Fri) from 8-9am, 9-10am, 10-11am, 11-noon We will also be demonstrating video over ATM, the latest Intel ProShare videoconferencing (13th and 14th only), and possibly Apple Mac videoconferencing. Demonstrations in the afternoon Friday and after 5 pm may be available upon request (send e-mail to John.Nichols@vt.edu, or leave voice mail at 231-4336). Demonstrations can also be arranged in the future, since we will be installing the ATM equipment in our LAN and WAN backbones.
